Buffalo State College's Civic and Community Engagement Office recently named their "Frederick Howe Outstanding Student Volunteer." The award is presented to a student who provided exceptional service to the community as a volunteer, not through a service-learning course.

Buffalo State College's Community and Civic Engagement Office recently named their "Outstanding Service-Learning Student." The honor is presented to the student who provided exceptional achievement in a service-learning course through their contribution to the community and ability to connect the experience to course curriculum.

Buffalo State College will grant the President's Medal for Outstanding Undergraduate and Graduate Student-the highest student honors bestowed by the college-to two of its most distinguished student leaders during its virtual 149th Commencement celebration on Saturday, May 15. The President's Medal recognizes students for their exceptional academic achievement, community service, leadership, and creativity.

Buffalo State College proudly recognized several students who were awarded the 2021 SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence. The highest student honor bestowed by SUNY, the Chancellor's Award recognizes those who have integrated academic excellence with distinguished achievement in areas such as community service, campus involvement, creative and performing arts, athletics, entrepreneurship, leadership, and career achievement.

Students on Buffalo State's Mock Trial Team took part in several competitions over the course of the semester, including the nationally-recognized "Friar Faceoff" tournament hosted by St. Bonaventure University. Mock trial is an intercollegiate competition in which student-witnesses and student-attorneys prepare fictional court cases for a simulated trial.

Buffalo State College's Career Development Center, in conjunction with the Buffalo State Intership Coordinators, recently named their "Department Interns of the Year" for 2020-2021. Students interned at a variety of organizations, from businesses to non-profits to hospitals.

Broadcasting Buffalo, a new TV series produced by students in Ellen Notarius's COM 337 Electronic News Producing class and Erick Karnath's COM 429 Advanced Multi-Camera Studio Production class, tackled some of the most relevant topics in news during the semester. Turning a local lens on national headlines, the show premiered on Saturday, March 27, and runs for 20 weeks: 10 original episodes plus repeats.

A presidential recognition is presented to Buffalo State College students who demonstrated extended involvement in community service, service-learning, and other community-based work during their college career.

Buffalo State College junior Alia Williams is among 212 students who have been named a 2021-2022 Newman Civic Fellow by Campus Compact, a national nonprofit organization that works to advance higher education's public purposes. The 2021 cohort comprises students from 39 states; Washington, D.C.; and Mexico.

Buffalo State College Art & Design students took part in the Fall 2020 Art & Design Student Exhibition. The exhibition featured student work from 100-and 200-level studio classes.

The Theater Department at Buffalo State College, in conjunction with the student-run production company Casting Hall Productions, virtually staged "Mother C," a contemporary adaptation of Mother Courage and her Children by Bertolt Brecht, written by Ansley Valentine and directed by associate professor of theater Jonathan Seinen. Based on Brecht's twentieth-century theatrical classic, Mother C reimagines a morality tale for our times.

Buffalo State College held its annual Arthur O. Eve Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) Honors Convocation virtually on May 18. The convocation recognizes students who have achieved a 3.0 GPA during the spring 2020 or fall 2019 semesters, as well as students who have a cumulative 3.0 GPA through 2020.

The Newman Civic Fellowship recognizes and supports community-committed students who are changemakers and public problem-solvers at Campus Compact member institutions. Fellows are nominated by their president or chancellor on the basis of their potential for public leadership.

Two Buffalo State College students won awards during the American Mock Trial Association (AMTA) 2020 Great Lakes Regional Tournament held at Buffalo State on February 8 and 9. This marked the 10th consecutive year that Buffalo State hosted the competition.

Twenty-three Buffalo State students and their friends braved frigid temperatures on Saturday, December 7, 2019, to plunge into Lake Erie to raise money for the Special Olympics. The Buffalo State Orange Crushers exceeded their goal by raising more than $3,700 in donations at the 2019 Special Olympics Polar Plunge in Woodlawn Beach and were recognized with the Best College Team Award. The Buffalo State Orange Crushers Team is co-sponsored by Buffalo State Best Buddies and the Student Council for Exceptional Children. They were supported by the Exceptional Education Department and United Students Government. Thank you to all who donated or participated.

The Theater Department at Buffalo State College, in conjunction with the student-run production company Casting Hall Productions, staged "The Lazy Chaperone." Hailed by New York Magazine as "the perfect Broadway musical," the production pokes fun at all the tropes that characterize the musical theater genre: offbeat characters, mistaken identities, and, of course, romance. Directed and choreographed by Carlos Jones, associate dean of the School of the Arts and Humanities; written by Bob Martin and Don McKellar; music and lyrics by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison.

Several graduate students from the Higher Education and Student Affairs Administration (HESAA) program presented at the College Student Personnel Association of New York State's (CSPA-NYS) annual conference in Rochester, N.Y. CSPA-NYS is the statewide conference for professionals working in higher education and student affairs administrative roles.

More than 600 students volunteered on Buffalo State's annual Bengals Dare to Care Day 2019. Students volunteered at a variety of community organizations as part of Buffalo State's commitment to community engagement.

Buffalo State College juniors in the Health, Nutrition, and Dietetics Program were involved in a collaborative training with D'Youville College's Dietetics Program and several community nutrition partners, including the Cornell Cooperative Extension, Eat Smart NY, and CATCH (Coordinated Approach to Child Health).
